RADIO MARIA The Basic Principles of its Apostolate Radio Maria was established to proclaim conversion by radio programs for the salvation of souls.

"People need the authentic Word, the Word which builds up and does not destroy, which generates confidence in troubled hearts, the pure and simple Word which announces Love and Truth. Such a word is the message of salvation. It is Christ himself. You are the heralds of this Word, but first you must be its witnesses. Only the Word which is sustained by a testimony of life, the Word which has his roots in the soil of faith, hope and love will have the strength to convince and to form the human person.

Radio Maria has the potential to become the instrument of the New Evangelization."

(Pope John Paul II to Radio Maria on March 23rd, 1994)

Guiding Principle Humble and respectful attention to the Pastors of the Catholic Church (Lumen Gentium 25)

Program Content and Structure Daily Prayers at regular times throughout the day, combining prayers from the Christian tradition with prayer for the intentions of the listeners.

This framework will include:

Holy Mass The Liturgy of the Hours The Rosary Religious Instruction: which in a clear and simple way will present the full richness of the faith and teaching of the Catholic Church about morals, liturgy and spirituality.

Family and Social Teachings: development of the individual and the family based on the catholic perspective on the family and the social teachings of the Church.

News from around the world and the universal Church, seen from the point of view of the faith. Music, which is religiously inspired, is in harmony with the catholic faith and which promotes personal renewal.

Target Audiences Special attention will be given to the needs of isolated and underrepresented groups in society, for example: the sick, the lonely, the imprisoned, young people. In this way those who normally have no means of expressing their opinion will be given a voice and through the use of the telephone on air will have an opportunity for prayer, dialogue and receive appropriate words of comfort.

Policy of Ecumenism, politics and private revelations Our attitude towards Christians of other traditions and towards believers in other religions will be the one of love, combining respect for the individual and his or her beliefs, with respect for the truth.

There will be no involvement on party politics, but the aim will be to promote in the listeners the development of a mature judgment in political matters. Radio Maria does not make use of private revelations, or broadcast programs about them, unless the Church has either recognized them as authentic or - at least - set up a commission of inquiry in a particular case (for example: Medjugorje) The findings of such a commission will be respected.

Characteristic Features Radio Maria operates on the basis of voluntary service to the Church, Our Lady and the faith. As far as possible every function is carried out by people who have given their hearts to the enterprise. Radio Maria is a radio with a missionary objective: it develops telephone contacts with listeners, which takes on the character of the local Church and broadcasts this reality live throughout the nation or language area. For this reason it attaches great importance to "on air" telephone calls and seeks to promote direct contact with listeners through live broadcastings, phone-ins, mailings and invitations to listeners to be present in the studio.

The spiritual sources of Radio Maria are:

- absolute trust in God's Providence and exemplary economy in the use of resources as a guarantee for financial independence

- the call to all listeners to aim for a high level of moral and spiritual life

- the voluntary cooperative principle sustained by a dynamic and organic organizational structure.

Relationship to the Catholic Church and Hierarchy I. Radio Maria is a project which was initiated by Catholics, both lay and ordained.

II. It operates in accordance with the teaching of the Church and within the framework of Canon Law: a) Lumen Gentium 25 and 33 - Apostolicam Actuositatem b) CIC 711 - 289 - 327 Radio Maria accepts fully the doctrinal supervision of the Magisterium of the Church, with the Church and within the Church, whilst remaining an independent radio. In practice this means that Radio Maria is independent legally, financially, in its operation and its administration, whilst it considers itself to be in the service of the Dioceses covered by its radio transmissions. Radio Maria is open to all groups who are working in harmony with the Church and has no preferences.

Radio Maria Mission Statement Radio Maria was founded to make full use of the opportunities offered by developments in radio and telecommunication technology by establishing interactive local radio stations to support the efforts of its listeners to reach salvation through conversion and renewal. It depends on voluntary workers and on the financial contributions of its listeners.

Program Structure Programs are designed to enable listeners to have daily opportunities to take part in the Church's life of prayer throughout the day creating their own pattern of work, prayer, instructions and news.

The daily RM program includes the Canonical Hours, the Eucharist, traditional Christian prayers and prayers for the intention of the listeners. It includes instruction in the faith which is clear and intelligible to the listeners and which allows time afterwards for listeners question and comments
