In a letter to priests worldwide for Holy Thursday by the Holy Father, the Pope said "as priests we are personally and profoundly afflicted by the sins of some of our brothers who have betrayed the grace of ordination."

He said they had succumbed "to the most grievous forms" of what he called, using the Latin phrase, "mystery of evil."

"Grave scandal is caused, with the result that a dark shadow of suspicion is cast over all the other fine priests who perform their ministry with honesty and integrity and often with heroic self-sacrifice," the Pope said.

John Paul said the Church "shows her concern for the victims and strives to respond in truth and justice to each of these painful situations."

"Beloved sons, I am particularly close to you, on this day of Holy Thursday. It is your day. It is your pasch……This is also the day of the betrayal: - 'In all truth I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.'- Jesus is deeply moved; his Heart is pierced with deep wounds in feeling Himself betrayed by his own: - 'One of you is going to betray me!' -
It is also the moment of human weakness and desertion. Peter denies Jesus three times; the apostles run away out of fear and forsake Jesus.
Young John remains; the apostle who loves; the faithful friend; the first of my beloved sons. And he remains with me, the sorrowful and crucified Mother.
This, his pasch, is perpetuated in time; this mystery of divine love, and of the human lack of return for that love, is renewed every day.

- How many are those today who participate in his priesthood, who share in his inheritance and who - in so many ways - betray Him!
They betray Him because they no longer believe in his divine word; the lack of faith is spreading; apostasy is diffused more and more within the Church.
They betray Him because they prefer the thirty pieces of silver to Him, the silver coins of convenience and pleasure, of impurity and pride, of the search for comfort and of self-affirmation.
How many are the Judases who today betray the Son of Man!

How numerous are those from among his own who deny Him, repeating the words of the human weakness of Peter. 'I do not know this man.'
They deny Him out of fear of not being thought well of and esteemed by the world in which they live; out of fear of being considered backward and old-fashioned; out of fear of being criticized and rejected.
Bishops and priests, beloved sons of mine, why do you repeat today, in such great numbers, by the way you live, the cruel gesture of Judas' betrayal and Peter's denial? The new Passion which is being repeated by Jesus in this pasch of 1992 is that of infidelity on the part of many of his priests.

The 39^th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, During this time we joined the Daughters of Divine Zeal in three full days of Prayer and Reflection, the Theme: "The vocation to holiness"

The vocation to ordained ministry "is essentially a call to holiness in the form which derives from the sacrament of Orders. Holiness is intimacy with God, it is the imitation of Christ, who was poor, chaste and humble; it is unreserved love for souls and a giving of oneself on their behalf and for their true good; it is love for the Church which is holy and wants us to be holy, because this is the mission that Christ entrusted to her" (Pastores dabo vobis, 33). Jesus calls the Apostles "to be his companions" (Mk 3,14) in a privileged intimacy (cf Lk 8,1-2; 22,28). Not only does he share with them the mysteries of the Kingdom of Heaven (cf Mt 13,16-18), but He expects a surpassing faithfulness from them, consonant with the Apostolic ministry to which He calls them. He demands a more rigorous poverty from them (cf Mt 19,22-23), the humility of a servant who becomes the last of all (cf Mt 20,25-27). He asks of them faith in the powers they received (cf Mt 17,19-21), prayer and fasting as effective tools of apostolate (cf Mk 9,29) and unselfishness: "You received without pay, give without pay" (Mt 10,8). From them He expects prudence together with simplicity and moral rectitude (cf Mt 10,26-28) and abandonment to Divine Providence (cf Lk 9,1-3; 19,22-23). They must also be aware of the responsibilities they assume, as they are administrators of the Sacraments established by the Master and laborers in His vineyard (cf Lk 12,43-48).

May the Lord of the harvest provide many holy priestly and religious vocations for His Church!

Holy Father, look upon this humanity of ours,
that is taking its first steps along the path of the Third Millennium.
Its life is still deeply marked by hatred, violence and oppression,
but the thirst for justice, truth and grace still finds a space in the hearts of many people,
who are waiting for someone to bring salvation, enacted by You through Your Son Jesus.
There is the need for courageous heralds of the Gospel, for generous servants of suffering humanity.
Send holy priests to Your Church, we pray, who may sanctify Your people
with the tools of Your grace.
Send numerous consecrated men and women, that they may show Your holiness in the midst of the world.
Send holy laborers into Your vineyard, that they may labor with the fervor of charity
and, moved by Your Holy Spirit, may bring the salvation of Christ
to the farthest ends of the Earth. Amen.

March 2002 NEWSLETTER

During the first week of Feburary we started our penitential season of Lent, where we prepare ourselves through self-deniel, we meditate on the forty days of fasting and prayer that Jesus experienced in the desert before he began his public ministry. Those days of temptations and self-denial reveal to us the conviction of the Lord who leads us through the desert of our own adversity.

Our Holy Father tells us:

1. The general audience today, Ash Wednesday, is characterized by a special spirit of prayer, reflection and penance. Together with the whole Church, we begin a 40-day journey in preparation for Easter with the austere sign of the imposition of ashes, coupled with Christ´s exhortation: "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" (see Mark 1:15). Thus every human being is reminded of his condition of sinner, and his need for penance and conversion.

Christian faith reminds us that this urgent call to reject evil and do good is a gift of God, from whom comes everything that is good for man´s life. Everything has its origin in the gratuitous initiative of God, who has created us for happiness and directs everything toward the true good. With his grace, he anticipates our own desire for conversion and supports our efforts toward full adherence to his salvific will.

2. In this year´s Lenten Message, published a few days ago, I wished to indicate to the whole Catholic world the theme of the gratuitousness of God´s initiative in our life, the essential element that spans the whole of biblical revelation. Lent is a "providential occasion for conversion," precisely because "it helps us to contemplate this wondrous mystery of love," in the light of which Jesus admonishes: "You received without pay, give without pay" (Matthew 10:8). The Lenten journey is thus revealed in its most profound reality, as "a return to the roots of the faith, because, meditating on the incommensurable gift of grace that is the Redemption, we cannot but realize that everything is given by loving divine initiative" (Message for Lent ...).

With incisive and timely words, the Apostle Paul expresses the gratuitousness of the grace of God, who has reconciled us with himself out of love. Indeed, he reminds us that "only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us" (Romans 5:7-8). That God who in his immense love has created us, and who likewise out of love has destined us to full communion with himself, seeks the same generous, free and conscious response from us. Our Lady Told Fr. Gobbi:

The First stage is that of renunciation and self-denial. It is necessary to renounce oneself, as well as all disordered attachments, passions, immoderate desires, ambitions. Even in your apostolic labours..you are never to seek success and human approval. Rather have a love for being hidden, for an apostolate carried out in silence, in humility, and the daily and faithful fulfuillment of your duties...(To the Priests, our Lady's beloved sons 260.c-d)

Together, from now on, let us go forward in the perfect imitation of Jesus, who invites us to follow Him on the way of the cross. Some of you will even have to shed your own Blood in the decisive moment of this bloody purification.(To the Priests, our Lady's beloved sons 260 s-t)

Fr. Gobbi reminds us in the Letter issued Jan 1st. 2002 to all National Directors, that P. Nazareno Lanciotti. the National Director of the MMP in Brazil was murdered . He was the first known martyr of Our Movement.

During this season let us continue to offer our prayers and suffering for the Intention of Our Blessed Mother as She knows the situation of the world and where the prayers need to go.
